chad carignan statement and pics

Over the years I have developed a keen interest in ceramics and the various forms of serving vessels as well as the ceremonies or practices involved with those vessels. Within the idea of ceramics as an art I believe there should be an aesthetic appeal to a form whether it functional or sculptural, it should appeal to the eye. In the world of functional ceramics I also believe there should also be an amount of comfort and enjoyment included in using a piece. The idea of comfort just seems to follow the natural way we consume most items; we like clothes that fit, keep us warm, and also look good. All of these ideas must come into form while I am making a ceramic vessel, aesthetics and comfort are as important with your drinking vessels as with any other product of consumption. Within this beauty and form I like to use asymmetry because of its practical applications in use as well as looks. We do not perform tasks in 90 and 180 degree angles and I would like to reflect this in my work. As well as a smooth operation I think an organic more asymmetric form also is more intriguing to the eye and gives ideas of motion leading to use.

Graphic design for me is not only about the end product, but also the process of getting there. Most of my work has a light, simple feel to it and I work to keep it that way. I think that simplicity is the best way to communicate the overall mood of any product, company, or subject of any graphic design piece. If I can capture many the many words to describe the mood of something into just one element, then to me that has the potential of being a powerful, well thought out design. Ultimately, my goal in creating graphic design is to communicate a message and convey a mood across any elements within that design.

My style of artwork, that I create, is focused on works of art that emulates a serial world filled with abstract imagery, vivid colors and visual vocabulary. I believe I can capture this by taking my interests and twisting then into a captivating visual experience.
My main focuses are in Photography, Ceramics, Installation and Craftwork. I love creating work that deals with all four of these aspects in Mix Media works of art. For my subject matter I like to examine nature, technology, the human form, and utilitarian objects in my artwork.  After I decide on what my focus will be I attack it from all different angles until I find the exact right way to showcase the message that I want my work to portray. Andy Warhol once said, “Art is what you can get away with”. I agree with this statement and I love the fact that art is subjective. I do not expect everyone to love my artwork, but I always strive to make artwork that is captivating to a variety of different of audiences.
With my artwork I am continually pushing it to be bigger and better than ever before. I hope to accomplish this by continuing to show my work and learning from my accomplishments and constructive feed back.
