My name is Brett Perry and I am a student at CWU graduating with a BFA in graphic design. I don't consider myself an artist, I consider myself more of a problem solver with an artistic eye, which I believe is a huge part of graphic design. In graphic design you need to communicate an idea or a message and figuring out how to do that is the art behind graphic design and once you figure out how to do that you explore different artistic techniques to show your answer to the problem.
Recently I have been interested in package design and the environment and how these two coexist. I have been exploring the use of environmentally friendly packaging design and ways we can use some of these natural products to help prevent harm to the environment. Most of these products evolve around recycled goods and environmentally friendly printing but I have also started to look at products such as burlap and hemp which are biodegradable and how I can use these in package design. Products like these are safe for the environment but they also have a texture and a visually strong appearance compared to some processed materials.
I still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to graphic design which is very exciting, my goal is to work in different fields such as layout, illustration, package design, advertising, etc. so I can become a well rounded artist in the graphics field. My goal is to be a designer you can go to and know that you will get the whole package not just a designer that is strong in a single field.
I think you've got some really good stuff going here Brett, but it seems like your statement would be much stronger if you talked more about your inspiration for doing the work and less about the work if you get what I'm saying?!?! Also what you said about being a problem solver is great. Maybe there's a better way to say that you don't consider yourself an artist though?
